In response to the surge in tourism driven by the Mayan Train, Tulum International Airport ‘Felipe Carrillo Puerto’ and Jaguar National Park have launched 400 golf carts as an alternative mode of transportation.
The initiative was made official with the publication of the concession titles in the Official State Gazette, granting permits to four private companies:
– CMX Logistic Center: 30 units
– Inmomercaqroo: 90 units
– Metromobility Group: 112 units
– Roasteryc: 168 units
These carts, which can carry up to six passengers, will operate under a rental scheme and must meet environmental and technical requirements, such as being hybrid or electric and not older than five years.
“This new transportation model seeks to alleviate traffic in Tulum, a city that has seen the number of visitors grow exponentially and faces intense vehicular flow in its downtown area,” Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo said in a brief interview.
A study by the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) revealed that between 44% and 53% of trips in the city are made in private vehicles, contributing to traffic congestion.
The Tulum International Airport exceeded the expectations of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). While IATA projected the airport would receive 700,000 passengers and operate 4,500 flights during 2024, the actual figures surpassed 7,790 operations and over one million passengers.
This initiative aims to provide a sustainable solution to Tulum’s traffic issues, ensuring a more pleasant experience for tourists while adhering to environmental standards.
