To expand sales channels and improve the economy of communities in the southern part of the state, the municipal governments of Tulum and Bacalar agreed on a joint strategy to facilitate the transportation and direct sale of crops produced by local producers in Quintana Roo.
The agreement was formalized during a visit by Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo to the municipality of Bacalar, where he toured the Mercado de la Prosperidad Compartida alongside his counterpart, José Alfredo Contreras Méndez, and local congresswoman Silvia Dzul Sánchez.
Regional agreement to open markets for local agriculture
The initiative seeks to break down distribution barriers so that families dedicated to farming can transport their products to new points of sale in neighboring municipalities, directly increasing their household income.
“This agreement between neighboring municipalities in the south is intended to ensure that all of you have opportunities in other places to market your products,” Castañón Trejo said during the tour.
The mayor emphasized that coordinated work among the state’s municipal governments has helped consolidate an agenda of unity for the benefit of families in the Maya region and southern Quintana Roo.
Direct support for women producers in the south
For his part, Bacalar Mayor José Alfredo Contreras Méndez welcomed the institutional coordination and the creation of spaces that allow fresh agricultural products to reach urban and tourist consumers.
During the meeting, women agricultural producers expressed their appreciation for the logistical and transportation support provided by municipal authorities to move vegetables, herbs, and handicrafts without the involvement of intermediaries.
