Tulum Airport Seeks to Revitalize Flights with Incentives

In an effort to boost air travel to the popular tourist destination, authorities in Quintana Roo are exploring ways to incentivize airlines to operate flights to Tulum Airport.

According to Pablo Casas, Undersecretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, the cancellation of seasonal flights was not unexpected. However, officials are now looking for strategies to encourage more airlines from around the world to fly into Tulum.

“We’re evaluating incentives with the airport group and seeing how the Tourism Promotion Council can join in,” Casas said.

The move comes after Air Canada announced a significant reduction in its flight schedule to Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum, citing lower-than-expected demand. The airline is not alone in its decision, as other airlines have also reported a decline in flights due to seasonal routes that are no longer viable.

David Ortiz Mena, president of the Mexican Caribbean Hotel Council (CHCM), sees great potential for the airport but acknowledges that it’s currently experiencing a significant drop in flights. “We’ll have to see a decrease in major flights during the summer,” he commented.

Airport officials and tourism authorities are working together to find solutions to revitalize air travel to Tulum, with the ultimate goal of restoring the airport’s reputation as a major tourist hub.
