Tourists visiting Bacalar have started using Tulum International Airport to mitigate the bottleneck effects caused by heavy vehicular traffic entering and leaving the state capital, Chetumal, stated Hiram Gómez, director of Tourism for the municipality of Bacalar.
For the past couple of months, the Tren Maya construction has caused many inconveniences for citizens, businesses, and tourists due to long queues to cross from one side to the other, even causing some visitors to miss their flights or connections.
Gómez explained that the disruptions caused by both the rains and the Tren Maya construction are generating delays in tourist transfers rather than cancellations. While Chetumal Airport is the gateway for tourism in Bacalar, the new Tulum Airport has helped alleviate this situation.
“It is a constant struggle. We are now facing the great challenge of completing the Tren Maya works, and similarly, the rains are affecting us to some extent. The promotional campaigns and actions being carried out in cultural and artistic matters help reinforce our image,” Gómez pointed out.
Gómez added that during the current summer vacation season, there is an estimated occupancy rate of around 80 percent, which are quite good numbers, thanks to the alternatives offered to tourists to visit Bacalar and have the best travel experience.
As reported by REPORTUR.mx, Tulum Airport, with six foreign airlines, has captured 0.5% of the foreign market and is now among the top 10 busiest airports in Mexico for international passengers, according to figures from the Federal Aviation Agency (AFAC).
