CANCÚN, QUINTANA ROO— A major electrical failure on the Tren Maya route between Mérida and Cancún left passengers stranded for more than five hours, sparking intense frustration over the lack of emergency protocols and basic provisions.
The incident occurred on the night of July 1 on the track segment between Leona Vicario and Cancún. The convoy was scheduled to arrive at the station by 8:00 PM, but due to the sudden power outage, passengers did not reach their destination until 2:50 AM the following morning.
Stranded travelers reported a complete absence of information regarding the delay, along with failing air conditioning units inside the cabins. Passengers—including elderly individuals and children—expressed desperation over the lack of food and water. In videos shared on social media, travelers were heard pleading for water so a passenger with cancer could take vital medication.

Onboard personnel eventually offered brief updates and managed to provide water for medical emergencies, but critics pointed to the incident as evidence that the railway system heavily lacks an effective contingency “Plan B” for unforeseen breakdowns. Authorities have yet to issue an official breakdown of the technical failure.
