In a completely family-friendly, cultural, and gastronomic atmosphere, the Traditional Fiesta of the Cancha Maya in Tulum has begun, expecting to gather more than 14,000 people during a week of festivities.

In this regard, the first councilor, David Tah Balam, who was one of the guests of honor and proudly born in this area, stated that this event is held respecting the traditions of the Mayan ancestors.

He explained that locals, Mexican tourists, and foreigners enjoy all the commercial, gastronomic, cultural, and entertainment activities offered by this event, which takes place every March and October.

“As every year or every October, the traditional festivities begin, although it is planned to always do it twice a year, we have March and October. These festivals are traditional, they are part of our culture and date back to the 1920s, information shared with us through a book by INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History) by the writer Guillermo Goni, published in 1980,” he added.

He detailed that in the late afternoon and evening, the fair game stalls, snacks, food, drinks, among others, open, with more than 2,000 people moving through per day.

He also mentioned that the traditional “matan,” which involves preparing traditional food and giving it away, provides meals to the residents of the ninth municipality.

“The cultural activities that take place throughout the night see more than 2,000 people, and the traditional matan involves giving food to more than 1,000 people. Matan comes from the Mayan word for gift, so it is traditional to give food,” he noted.
