Residents of Cancun face significant challenges when trying to enjoy the hotel zone, as access to beaches and parking areas is increasingly limited by tourist companies. These businesses often place guards to control these spaces, which were once public and free.
During a visit to the beaches, it was evident that parking areas designated for public use are now occupied by companies in the tourist industry, effectively privatizing these spaces.
Maria, a resident of Region 100, shared her experience: “We come by bus to enjoy Jardín del Arte with family visiting from Acapulco, but the areas we can use are occupied by tourists and their agents waiting for tour boats. We have no choice but to find another spot to prepare our sandwich.”
Rafael, who was visiting the hotel zone with a family member in a wheelchair, said: “It has been very difficult to access by car. All the spaces are occupied, and those that are free are guarded by security from different companies. They chase us away because they are waiting for tours. This happened to me in front of Playa Tortugas.”
This situation is common at various beach entrances, where chains often prohibit visitor entry, forcing them to use limited areas while the rest is reserved for hotels. In some cases, access is completely restricted, and guards direct bathers to public beaches like Delfines, Fórum, Langosta, and Tortugas.
Edwin Rojas, a visitor from Monterrey, explained that these are the only public beaches in Cancun, according to the guards.
