The State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) is processing three members of the National Guard who have been accused of sexually assaulting a young woman in Isla Mujeres.
Four National Guard members were arrested on July 11, and three of them have now been turned over to the FGE for prosecution.
According to a statement issued this morning, the FGE does not explicitly mention that these individuals are National Guard members. The detainees are identified as Bernabé Caín “N,” Ulises “N,” and Guadalupe Rodrigo “N.” Another individual named Rodrigo was apparently released, as he was not involved in the criminal act.
The initial investigations indicate that the victim was at the beach with her boyfriend when one of these men approached and threatened them. Subsequently, another male arrived, separated the boyfriend from the young woman, and then sexually assaulted her, with the complicity of a third individual.
The report from the Isla Mujeres Municipal Police provides further details. According to the victim’s account, she and her boyfriend were engaged in sexual activity on Playa Mía when they were surprised by these officers.
Allegedly, the officers informed them that they would be detained, but the boyfriend offered them 450 pesos (approximately $22 USD). One of the officers told the young man that it was not enough, so the boyfriend left with the promise to return promptly with more money.
The young woman stated that it was after this incident, while she was alone with these individuals, that she was sexually assaulted.
Minutes later, municipal police officers arrived at the scene and arrested these individuals. However, they were taken to the Public Safety holding cells for urinating in public and insulting the agents.
Following the victim’s complaint to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Sexual Crimes and Personal Development, the FGE initiated an investigation. A judge granted an arrest warrant against the three suspects, and they are now in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
