Thousands gathered at Playa del Carmen’s 28 de Julio square to celebrate Pixano’ob Sáacil óol (Deceased, beings of light). The event was led by Estefanía Mercado, the municipal president of Solidaridad. Over five thousand locals and foreigners joined in, with many more gathering on Fifth Avenue for a night of celebration and tradition.

The lighting of the great Hanal Pixan altar marked the beginning of a series of artistic and cultural activities that will take place from October 31 to November 3. These events aim to honor those who came before us and strengthen Mexico’s and Solidaridad’s identity and traditions.

At this time, we come together around vibrant altars filled with colors, aromas, and offerings, each symbolizing our connection to the past and hope for the future. This is a moment when we feel connected to our loved ones, who return to share in our celebrations and taste the food prepared for them.

Estefanía Mercado committed to preserving and promoting traditions, recognizing that they are what make us strong. She encouraged families to participate in this tribute, emphasizing that every smile and memory shared strengthens our bond with our culture.

The mayor toured the 23 altars set up in the square, showcasing the diversity of states represented, including Baja California, Tabasco, Coahuila, Sinaloa, Zacatecas, Durango, Guerrero, Michoacán, Hidalgo, Puebla, Tamaulipas, Oaxaca, and Campeche.

Estefanía Mercado was joined by councilors and officials from her cabinet as they kicked off the Pixano’ob Sáacil óol cultural program. The event featured performances by various artists, including the Voladores de Papantla, Los Huahuas, IMCAS folkloric ballet, a ritual show, dance groups, and mariachi Atlantis.

In the following days, more cultural activities will take place, culminating with Eugenia León’s performance on Saturday in the 28 de Julio square. Local artists will also participate in various events throughout the celebration.
