The Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA) presented the progress in the construction of the new Tulum airport, which will be under the supervision of the state conglomerate Grupo Aeroportuario, Ferroviario y de Servicios Auxiliares Olmeca-Maya-Mexica, S.A. de C.V., and it will be an alternative to depressurize the international airport of Cancun.
According to the federal government, this runway will begin operations in 2024, before the end of the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and will have the capacity to serve around 5.5 million passengers annually with a platform that in its first phase will have up to 32,000 annual air operations.
The platform will have 13 positions for commercial aircraft, both domestic and international flights, and an additional platform for general aviation and executive aviation that will have 28 positions; It will also have a backup hangar with another 12 positions or spaces for executive aircraft.
“This project will satisfy the growing demand of passengers who visit this tourist destination in the south of the Riviera Maya. Its infrastructure and operational potential classify it within the airports with a category 4 ECO, that is to say that all the aircraft that arrive and leave our country can operate at this airport”, said Gustavo Vallejo, resident engineer of the General Directorate of Engineers of the SEDENA
According to National Defense estimates, of the 5.5 million passengers that arrive annually at the Tulum International Airport Felipe Carrillo Puerto, 75% will be of foreign origin.
This airport complex is built on an area of 1,500 hectares, with a runway 3,700 meters long, with a category one landing system instrument and high-tech navigation aids.
In addition, the air traffic control tower, the fuel terminal, the airport services area that has drinking water plants, wastewater treatment plants, an executive aviation facility and a fixed base of operations or FBO are being built.
This new air terminal will have a road interconnection with federal highway 307 that will promote the creation of an airport city and the urban reorganization of Tulum, as well as the creation of a commercial and service corridor with a length of 10.5 kilometers, in addition to directly connecting with the Mayan Train through a passenger station.
“This airport will have a wide range of airport services, in addition to a multi-purpose military air base to strengthen the security and surveillance of the national airspace, assist the population in cases of disasters and attend to forest fires,” explained the SEDENA.
