With the aim of promoting sustainable alternatives for the agricultural and livestock sector, the Directorate of Agricultural and Fisheries Development—led by Alejandro López—participated in a seminar on the use of sargassum in agricultural production, held at the Rancho Tigre Grande experimental production unit.

The event was coordinated in collaboration with Fernando Chico Hall, a livestock producer and member of the Playa del Carmen Local Livestock Association. It brought together producers interested in learning about options to utilize sargassum as a strategic resource for agricultural activities.

During the session, Alejandro López highlighted the importance of providing producers with information and practical insights that can transform an environmental challenge into a development opportunity for the sector, through practices that foster both sustainability and productivity.

The meeting showcased various alternatives for using sargassum—particularly as a soil conditioner and an input with the potential to strengthen agricultural production systems—while simultaneously helping to address the impacts caused by its accumulation on the coast.

The training session was attended by 15 livestock producers from Playa del Carmen, who exchanged experiences and analyzed the possibilities of incorporating this natural resource into their production processes.

In this way, the Government of Playa del Carmen strengthens the ties between producers, specialists, and authorities to drive innovative solutions that contribute to the sustainable development of the agricultural sector and the responsible use of the region’s natural resources.
