Teachers’ March Brings Traffic Chaos to Quintana Roo Roads, Citizens Left Walking in Frustration

A massive teachers’ march from various municipalities in Quintana Roo caused traffic chaos on the state’s roads, forcing some citizens to abandon their vehicles and walk several kilometers to reach the city center.

The demonstration, which was part of a protest against the ISSSTE Law, saw thousands of teachers converge on Felipe Carrillo Puerto, where they gathered for an indefinite stoppage. The marchers left different entrances to the city, causing long lines of vehicles to accumulate at the highway junctions leading into Chetumal, Mérida, and Tulum.

One of the busiest hotspots was the entrance to the city from the highway to Tulum, where protesters took over the road, periodically opening it to allow vehicles to pass before resuming their march. This created a bottleneck effect, with traffic backed up for miles as drivers waited to enter the city.

Citizens who arrived in the city by public transportation were left stranded, unable to move their vehicles for hours. Frustrated and fed up, many decided to abandon ship and walk into the city on foot. Some had to cover nearly two kilometers before reaching the city center.

The situation was exacerbated by the sheer number of protesters, who seemed to have no regard for the impact their actions were having on the local community. While some may have been sympathetic to the teachers’ cause, others were left seething at the inconvenience caused by the march.

As a result of the traffic chaos, many commuters and visitors to the city had to endure long delays, with some even forced to walk into the city in search of alternative transportation. The situation highlights the need for better coordination between authorities and protesters to minimize disruptions to local residents and businesses.
