Lenin Amaro Betancourt, president of the Business Coordinating Council, said that areas located in the center of Playa del Carmen are badly affected.

Sargassum “mountains” almost two meters high are observed in the areas of El Recodo, Caribe, in the vicinity of the maritime terminal of Playa del Carmen and Punta Esmeralda, north of the city; one of the most damaged and also one of the most visited by tourists.

During the weekend it gradually arrived, and by Sunday it was already observed in high amounts of sargassum.

According to workers from the Directorate of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), there were more than 100 tons of seaweed that landed last week, which began to arrive from Friday and still at the beginning of this week lay scattered on the sandbanks.

The amount of algae that arrived was such that mounds were formed that exceeded two meters in height and prevented the free movement of tourists on the coast located in the center of Playa del Carmen.

However, according to testimonies from tourism service providers in the area, since last Wednesday the winds changed from the southeast to the northeast, which caused a lower arrival of sargassum.

Yesterday morning, Zofemat workers reported that they had barely collected less than five tons , particularly on the beaches that are located from the pier of the maritime terminal in Playa del Carmen, to the pier on Constituyentes Avenue.

José Gómez Burgos, general secretary of the Caribbean Sea tourist cooperative, informed, based on his maritime observations, that the next stops will be in lesser proportion because northeast winds are expected in the coming days.

“ This constant from the east and southeast brings us sargassum again (…) as they are weak fronts for these dates they cannot conclude, so these winds are constant, but in the next few days it will be less strong, weaker. The amount of sargassum is decreasing ”, commented Gómez Burgos.

José Gómez Burgos, secretary of the Caribbean Sea tourist cooperative, said that there is fear among the nautical that tourists will prefer other destinations to travel in summer and the season will be lost again.
