The recent surge in reports of animal abuse in the state of Quintana Roo has prompted authorities to share information on how citizens can report such incidents. Following a disturbing video that went viral online, showing a three-month-old Chihuahua named “Osito” being tied to a drone by a group of young people in Xul-Ha, Bacalar, the government has released contact details for municipal authorities responsible for addressing cases of animal violence.
In various municipalities across the state, citizens can report animal abuse or seek assistance from local authorities. In Benito Juárez, residents can visit the Animal Protection and Welfare Directorate, located at Nichupté Avenue in Cancún. Those living in Lázaro Cárdenas can contact the Ecology Directorate in the Centro neighborhood.
In Puerto Morelos, individuals can turn to the Animal Welfare Directorate and Animal Control, Assistance, and Zoonosis Center in the Zetina Gazca neighborhood. Isla Mujeres residents have two options: the General Directorate of Urban Development, Environment, Ecology, and Transportation at the Isla Mujeres Municipal Palace or the Environment and Ecology Directorate.
In Cozumel, animal abuse cases can be reported to the Animal Control Center, while Tulum residents should contact the Urban Development Directorate. Those living in Felipe Carrillo Puerto can report incidents to the Animal Control Coordination Office.
Playa del Carmen residents can visit the Municipal Animal Welfare Center, while José María Morelos residents have access to the Ecology and Environment Directorate. Othón P. Blanco residents can report cases to the Municipal Health Department, and Bacalar residents should contact the Subdirectorate of Ecology and Environment.
A recent incident in Cancún sparked widespread outrage after a stray dog was seriously injured with a machete during an altercation between the dog and its owner’s pet. The alleged perpetrator reportedly used the machete to separate the two animals, leaving the dog badly injured.
Neighbor and witnesses reported the incident, enabling rescuer Orlando Alemán of the Huellitas Alemán Foundation to provide video evidence of his efforts in treating “Blu,” as he came to be known, at a veterinary clinic. Hours later, Governor Mara Lezama announced via video that authorities had located “Blu” and would work with the Attorney General’s Office to protect him and investigate the incident.
These incidents highlight the need for residents to report animal abuse cases promptly, ensuring those responsible are held accountable, and victims receive the necessary assistance. By providing contact information for municipal authorities, the government aims to create a more transparent and effective system for addressing animal welfare concerns in Quintana Roo.
