Quintana Roo Says Goodbye to Dolphinariums: Governor Mara Lezama Signs Law Banning Shows with Marine Animals

The Mexican government has taken a significant step towards protecting marine animals by banning dolphin shows and dolphinariums in Quintana Roo, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The decision follows the unanimous approval by the Chamber of Deputies to prohibit dolphin breeding for economic purposes.

Governor Mara Lezama has signed a law that prohibits the ownership and use of marine mammals, except for conservation purposes. This move is seen as a major victory for animal welfare advocates who have been pushing for an end to dolphinariums and dolphin shows in Mexico.

The new law will have a significant impact on Quintana Roo, which has 17 out of the country’s 34 dolphinariums. However, before the implementation of this new regulation, the state government had already begun designing technical and legal routes to facilitate a smoother transition to the closure of these facilities.

Dolphinarium Managers Respond

The Mexican Habitat Association for the Interaction and Protection of Marine Mammals A.C. (AMHIPMMAC) has taken a position on the law, stating that it will continue to abide by the law and provide dignified treatment to the animals in its care at its various facilities. However, it also requests that authorities establish clear protocols for management, reproductive control, and welfare conditions based on science and expert input.

The legislation does not prevent established humane care centers with mammals from operating, provided they are properly registered and remain in their current position, and require specific plans. The decision to ban dolphin shows and dolphinariums is seen as a major step towards protecting marine animals and promoting animal welfare in Mexico.

This move follows the lead of Costa Rica and Chile, which have already implemented similar laws. By signing this law, Governor Mara Lezama has ensured that Quintana Roo will no longer be home to dolphin shows and dolphinariums, providing a more humane and compassionate environment for marine animals.
