The Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) warned about the 75% increase in sargassum just for the Easter season and the arrival of tourists for the World Cup in the summer.
For the entity, the greatest concern lies in the Western Central Atlantic, where a colossal mass of 280,097 tons is estimated to move westwards.
The authorities of the three levels of government advanced preventive measures in the tourist corridor between Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel, in the face of what is expected to be a record accumulation in 2026.
Likewise, the Navy said that 16 surface units, one ocean-going vessel, 11 coastal vessels, and four amphibious sargassums, as well as 9,500 meters of barriers for containment, will remain in operation. Additionally, it was reported that, in coordination with the Government of Quintana Roo, it is planned to implement six thousand meters more.
For March and April, levels are expected to exceed 75% of historical values; it is expected that mass arrivals to Quintana Roo will intensify in these months.
The presence of sargassum decreased considerably thanks to the entry of cold front 33, which allowed the beaches to remain clean and with their traditional turquoise color during the last few days.
