Municipal police officers in Cancun, Quintana Roo, was dismissed and will face sanctions after a viral video captured them asking a driver for a bribe. Local authorities are taking firm action against corruption.
The video, recorded by a dash cam on February 1st around 2:00 a.m., shows an officer asking a driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, for a bribe on Tulum Avenue. The officer can be heard saying, “Take out how much? Take out 12 thousand (pesos), we’ll give you a hand. There’s an ATM there, look! And from there you can go home.”
The video sparked various reactions among citizens, who criticized the officers for prioritizing a bribe over enforcing the law and allowing a dangerous driver to continue on the road.
Municipal President Ana Patricia Peralta announced the suspension of the officers involved, who were using unit 5687 that day. In a video statement, she said, “I immediately gave instructions to remove the police from office and investigate the events. In Cancun, we will not tolerate corruption and much less impunity. We will act firmly and transparently, we will not allow any public security element to stain the uniform of an entire corporation.”
Peralta thanked those who report misconduct on social media, as it helps identify and address corrupt elements. She emphasized her administration’s commitment to building an honest Cancun where the law is applied equally, declaring that “impunity is over” in her government.
The Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCyT) launched an investigation through the Internal Affairs Directorate with file number SMCT/DAI/035/02/2025. They stated, “This conduct is unacceptable and contrary to the principles of honor, ethics, and service that govern our corporation. The SMSCyT will not tolerate any action that threatens the integrity and well-being of citizens and the fundamental values of the institution. All elements involved in acts of corruption, or any other violation will be subject to the corresponding sanctions, without exception.”
Authorities are determined to address this issue and ensure accountability within the police force.
