In a major joint operation on the Hondo River, authorities have seized 21 vessels, and 14 vehicles loaded with suspected contraband merchandise allegedly originating in Belize but destined for Mexico. The operation was carried out by Semar (Navy Secretariat) officers who were tipped off about suspicious boat activity transporting illicit goods from Central American waters.
When they noticed the naval presence, the operators attempted to flee, prompting a security operation involving the Sedena (National Security Forces), the National Guard, and the Quintana Roo Security Secretariat. The Eleventh Naval Zone led the operations with collaboration from authorities at all levels of government.
The seized merchandise was handed over to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office for further investigation. This operation is seen as a significant step in strengthening surveillance along the river border, an area critical for illicit trafficking between Mexico and Belize.
Semar has vowed to maintain coordinated patrols to intercept this type of activity, underscoring its commitment to tackling contraband smuggling in the region. The operation sends a strong message about the determination of Mexican authorities to protect their borders from illegal activities.
