The authorities took more than two hours to control the fire in a Tulum shopping center that caused a thousand people to be evacuated.
At least a thousand people were evacuated due to the strong fire that affected a shopping center in Tulum, Quintana Roo, located at kilometer 6.5 of the Tulum-Boca Paila highway.
The fire started at approximately 10:00 p.m. and it took authorities more than 2 hours to control it.
This was reported by the director of Civil Protection in Tulum, Gilberto Gómez Mora, to Milenio where he commented that the evacuated people were transferred to safe areas while the Fire Department went to work to douse the flames.
110,000 liters of water were used to control the fire and the support of pipes from the union of the National Union of Peasant Transporters (UNTRAC) was requested.
He also mentioned that so far there are no reports of injuries, although the fire caused serious material damage that includes five establishments, 10 rooms, and 30 shops, including a commercial store, a pharmacy, a tattoo shop, as well as a restaurant, and a boutique.
The fire also consumed the area known as Jungle Market, affecting more than 30 establishments located near the Tulum-Boca Paila highway.
So far the causes of the fire are unknown, although the corresponding investigations are being carried out to find out where the flames originated.
