Feb. 21—An online fundraising campaign for the family of a Minnesota man who died on Super Bowl Sunday in Mexico has generated almost $95,000 in donations.
Tyler Moening, 39, of Savage, was killed in a bike accident on Feb. 13 while vacationing with his wife and two young daughters in Riviera Maya, a stretch of Caribbean coastline on Mexico’s northeastern Yucatán Peninsula.
“The police investigation showed that while riding his bike at night, he hit a curb, and he and the bike fell down a fairly steep area, where he hit his head on a rock,” according to information published on the family’s GoFundMe page. “We closed the case, as we don’t suspect any foul play in his unfortunate death.”
The GoFundMe campaign to help Moening’s family had raised about $94,500 by Monday afternoon, just short of the goal of $100,000, an “outpouring of love (that) is confirmation of how loved Tyler was,” an update on the post states.
Moening grew up in Walker, Minn., and played football and wrestled at Walker-Hackensack-Akeley High School, according to his obituary. He graduated with a degree in graphic design from Minnesota State University Moorhead.
After college, Moening moved to the Twin Cities area, where he began his career working in business computer software sales. He worked for Epicor, Oracle, and, most recently, he was an account executive for Salesforce, according to his obituary.
He and his wife, Rebecca, were married in 2012 and had two daughters, Mila and Eva, “whom he loved more than words can say,” his obituary states.
Moening “was truly one-of-a-kind and had an insatiable zest for life and adventure,” his obituary states. “His very presence and smile were infectious and would light up a room.”
A Minnesota Vikings season-ticket holder, Moening would travel with friends every football season “to watch a Vikings game at different away stadiums around the country,” according to his obituary. “Tyler’s Viking-themed ‘Man Cave’ at his home is a sight to behold and is truly an impressive display of Minnesota Viking art and memorabilia.”
A celebration of Moening’s life will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26th, at the Bluewater Lodge in Walker.
Attendees are asked to wear “their favorite Vikings (or another favorite team) themed attire to honor Tyler, the team’s #1 Fan,” the GoFundMe post states.
