The governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama Espinosa, warned of an alleged scam in the Akumal-Tulum area, specifically in the Santa Teresa neighborhood, where individuals are offering free land in exchange for cleaning properties through the “Obra por Amor” (Work for Love) profile. She described this practice as completely false and deceptive to the public.

During the program “La Voz del Pueblo” (The Voice of the People), the governor stated that a call has been detected for families to come and clean land on Sundays, under the promise of receiving a plot of land in return, which—she emphasized—is “completely false.”

She added that the page being used is allegedly a religious community, but they have no knowledge of the person carrying out this practice, as certain permits are required to clean land.

Mara Lezama explained that this scheme could involve various irregularities, from environmental damage to potential risks to the safety of those who participate, and that there is no legal basis for handing over land under these conditions.

In response, she reported that a coordinated investigation has been launched between federal, state, and municipal agencies, with the participation of departments such as Agepro, Sedatu, Sedetus, and the municipality, in order to determine responsibility and stop these types of practices.

Governor Mara Lezama urged citizens not to be deceived and to verify any housing offers through official channels, such as institutional programs for access to land and housing, like the Welfare Housing program of Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.

On another topic discussed on “The Voice of the People,” the Governor announced a comprehensive rehabilitation project for the Payo Obispo Zoo, with an estimated investment of 20 million pesos.

She explained that the plan envisions transforming the space into a modern, sustainable, and educational facility, prioritizing animal welfare and biodiversity conservation.

The planned actions include: rehabilitating and adapting habitats for existing species, improving general infrastructure and access, creating green areas, recreational zones, and cultural spaces, as well as installing signage, a museum and exhibition areas, and spaces for educational and environmental awareness activities.

Governor Mara Lezama indicated that the project aims to transform this site into a meeting point for families and a tourist attraction for the state capital, in addition to promoting environmental education among the population.
