The Playa del Carmen municipal government has made it clear that it will not allow the privatization of any beach within its jurisdiction. In an official statement, they emphasized that all projects proposed for the coastal areas must comply with environmental and urban planning regulations.
The statement was issued in response to public concern over a potential development project on Mamitas Beach, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. The municipal authority clarified that no local authorization has been given for the project, and it is subject to assessments by other bodies.
Mamitas Beach has long been a point of contention over the use of public space. Complaints have been made regarding the installation of lounge chairs and furniture on the federal zone, which reduces the space available for residents and visitors who do not consume on-site.
The municipal government reiterated its commitment to guaranteeing free public access to the beaches as well as protecting coastal ecosystems. They emphasized that their administration would continue to respect and enforce the legislation that safeguards these rights.
In a time when tourism development put pressure on natural spaces, resulting in the loss of public access or environmental degradation, the Playa del Carmen administration stood firm against privatization.
“We are guarantors of compliance with the law,” the statement emphasizes. “And in our administration, these principles are non-negotiable.”
The declaration sent a clear message to citizens and organizations that any intervention on the coastline must meet all legal and environmental requirements before being considered.
