Mahahual Residents Threaten to Block Bacalar-Tulum Highway Over CFE Inaction

Residents and business owners in Mahahual are fed up with constant power outages and have announced plans to block the Bacalar-Tulum federal highway next Monday if the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) does not resolve the issue this weekend. They have been enduring these conditions for almost a month.

Planned Protest

Rodrigo Benavides, a representative of the committee organizing the demonstration, stated that the blockade will take place at the junction of Highway 307 towards Mahahual. The protest is scheduled to start early in the morning to maximize its impact during peak traffic hours.

Support from Business Owners

Local business owners fully support the demonstration and have granted their workers permission to participate. They are frustrated with the situation, which has caused significant economic damage and losses due to damaged electronic equipment from the power outages.

Restaurateur Nazle Cabrera reported losses amounting to 40,000 pesos because her refrigerators broke down due to the blackouts. She has incurred additional expenses to keep her business running despite the lack of electricity. Cabrera added, “But the CFE does not want to take responsibility for these damages, claiming that these are issues beyond their control. Meanwhile, we continue to operate without electricity as best we can because we need to work. And, as if that were not enough, they are now announcing the suspension of electricity just on the days when we have the most traffic.”

Efforts to Ensure Electricity Supply

The situation has become so dire that Mahahual business owners are making arrangements to install an electrical substation in the area to guarantee a stable electricity supply. If the current situation continues, it will be challenging for them to operate due to the economic impact of the power outages, which affects not only the businesses but the entire community.
