Tourism service providers and business owners in Mahahual say the destination is facing a difficult economic situation due to the decline in visitors, which has led to low sales, job losses, and difficulties keeping many businesses open.
According to residents and business owners in the area, commercial activity has fallen considerably, forcing some owners to resort to loans or use their savings to cover operating expenses while they wait for tourism to recover.

This situation arises after the controversy generated on social media by various environmental groups, activists, and influencers who expressed their opposition to infrastructure projects in the area. However, business owners maintain that the support shown on digital platforms has not translated into a greater influx of visitors or economic benefits for the community.
Residents point out that Mahahual depends heavily on tourism to sustain its economy and believe that, beyond social media campaigns, the destination needs the arrival of visitors to reactivate commercial activity and preserve jobs.
