Integrating Electric Scooters into Playa del Carmen’s Traffic Regulations

The Mobility Commission of Solidaridad is set to begin analyzing regulations to address the growing concerns over electric scooters, which have already caused several severe road accidents in Playa del Carmen, especially in the tourist areas.

Renán Santos Morales, the commission’s president, stated that the lack of regulations for these devices has led to numerous problems. “Before establishing new rules and incorporating them into the traffic regulations, we need to raise awareness among users about the responsibility that comes with using these micromobility devices,” he emphasized.

Electric scooters, capable of exceeding speeds of 25 kilometers per hour, have become a popular alternative for mobility in Playa del Carmen over the past three years, particularly in the city center. However, motorists frequently complain about scooter users running red lights and ignoring other traffic signals.

On social media forums, scooter users argue that they have the right to travel freely through the city. Santos Morales noted, “I’ve seen people riding scooters in the opposite direction, not slowing down at pedestrian crossings, and even using them on Quinta Avenida, a pedestrian zone.”

The relatively low cost of electric scooters, around four thousand pesos, makes them an accessible option compared to cars or motorcycles. However, the current Mobility Law of Quintana Roo does not provide clear guidelines on how these vehicles should be governed.

As the city looks to integrate scooters into its traffic regulations, the focus will be on ensuring safety for all road users while accommodating this popular mode of transportation.
