During 2024, Quintana Roo has reported 848 cases of dengue, raising concerns about the progression of symptoms in those affected. So far this year, 848 people have fallen ill, prompting doctors to advise against self-medication.

According to the Dengue Epidemiological Overview issued by the federal Secretariat of Health, out of these cases, 462 exhibited warning signs. One such case is that of 11-year-old Ángel Tapia Montero, who recently battled this disease with the help of medical attention and care from his parents.

Before the diagnosis, Ángel’s father, Miguel Ángel Tapia, administered ibuprofen to him during a fever episode. However, health professionals caution against using ibuprofen in dengue cases. As the hours passed, Ángel’s fever persisted, and he began experiencing joint pain and general discomfort. He was eventually taken to the hospital, where tests confirmed dengue hemorrhagic fever. Although the news was devastating for the family, proper care and treatment facilitated his recovery.

Miguel Ángel now warns other parents about the dangers of self-medication and emphasizes the importance of being informed about diseases and their treatments.

Dr. Arturo Fernández Nava, a physician in Cancún, explains that parents often mistake any fever for an infection and attempt to alleviate symptoms using previously prescribed medications. However, seeking professional advice is crucial to avoid such incidents. In Ángel’s case, proper examination and treatment would likely have resolved the fever with acetaminophen.

Dengue is a common disease, especially during the rainy season. To prevent its spread, it’s essential to cover water storage containers and clean up stagnant water, as these areas can serve as breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes²³.
