The Riviera Maya Hotel Association (AHRM) has set up its Internal Civil Protection Committee to update safety protocols that guarantee the protection of tourists, collaborators, and facilities in anticipation of the start of the Atlantic hurricane season.
As every year, the tourism body called its more than 120 associated hotels to a meeting with the meteorologist of the Solidarity City Council, Luis Antonio Morales Ocaña, to analyze forecasts and preparations to successfully face the months with the highest risk of these climatic phenomena, which span from June 1 to November 30.
The hotel group reaffirmed its commitment to act in coordination with municipal and state authorities to care for and protect guests, staff, and facilities against the imminent threat of a meteorological phenomenon on the coasts of Quintana Roo, indicating that this year it will be necessary to be very alert due to issues such as the warming of the oceans that could lead to an increase in the number of hurricanes, between September and November, although these phenomena “have no word” and could occur at any time.
Similarly, it mentioned that there are factors to consider, such as the arrival of many people to the Yucatan Peninsula who have never experienced these natural phenomena, so it will be necessary to train them to act in the best way in the face of these hurricanes.
The establishment of the committee allows the hotel and tourism industry to become aware of the need to update their internal civil protection manuals, as well as to renew their agreements with transport companies and temporary shelters in case they need to evacuate their guests and register them in the Immediate Guest Location System for prompt location in the event of a hurricane.
According to the National Water Commission (Conagua), and various universities in the United States, for this year in the Atlantic zone, the presence of about 23 tropical cyclones is estimated, of which about 12 will be tropical storms, 6 hurricanes category 1 or 2, and 5 hurricanes category 3,4 or 5, with Quintana Roo being one of the 6 states with aquatic borders susceptible to receiving one of these cyclonic systems.
