The tourism sector was one of the hardest hit during the pandemic, so the local and federal governments will seek options to reactivate the economy in the state

Arturo Herrera, head of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit ( SHCP ), met with Carlos Joaquín, governor of Quintana Roo, to discuss the strategy of economic reactivation in the entity, whose predominant industry is tourism.

Through his Twitter account, Dr. Herrera Gutiérrez informed public opinion of the main issues to be discussed, which were the Mayan Train, the Nichupté Vehicle Bridge, and various infrastructure works carried out in the entity with the support of the federal government.

“Quintana Roo, with an important tourist vocation, is one of the states most affected by the pandemic; therefore, in a meeting with Governor Carlos Joaquín, we reviewed schemes for economic reactivation, such as the Mayan Train project and the Nichupté Bridge “, published this Sunday, January 24, the head of the Treasury of Mexico along with a photo in which he appears with the governor.

This is not the first time that the UAM economist meets with a governor since, previously, he had already held a meeting with Javier Corral, governor of Chihuahua, where they established action protocols to reactivate the economy in the largest state of Mexico.

This is because in November of last year, the entity governed by the PAN militant was going through a rebound in cases of COVID-19, which led to a limitation in mobility and economic activities, whose focus is the manufacturing, mining, and the agricultural sector. For such reason that measures were taken in the specific understanding of the entity.

As for Quintana Roo, the reactivation is outlined through tourism, since both the Mayan Train and the Nichupté Bridge will improve the state’s connectivity to make the transit of tourists more efficient.

The bridge will be 8.7 kilometers long over the Nichupté Lagoon to join Boulevard Colosio with Boulevard Kukulkán, which is integrated by the Kabah road distributor, to improve mobility between the hotel zone and the city. It is important to remember that it is in a preliminary stage since the necessary studies are being carried out and it is expected that for construction there will be participation from both the public and private sectors.

It should be noted that this type of intervention is part of the post-COVID-19 reactivation project since the federal government opted for a mechanism based on the infrastructure of public-private participation for different industries that suffered from the mechanisms to combat the pandemic.

The implementation of this initiative obeys the logic that the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador decided not to contract debt in relation to the period of confinement, to manage the resources internally to help the most affected sectors, such as tourism, the restaurateur and entertaining away from home.

In addition to this, on Thursday, January 14, Herrera Gutiérrez explained why he chose not to borrow from the World Bank, as many countries in Europe did, and synthesized that the difference between the interest rates that exist between countries it would have caused an over-indebtedness in Mexico of around 400,000 million pesos.

“Those countries could afford that luxury because they increased their debt, but the interest rates they were paying were very close to zero or even negative. This means that when they are countries that are getting into debt they are paying interest. It is a very different situation in countries like us, “explained the head of the Treasury on social networks.
