The different taxi unions of the entity announced that they will apply their usual rate increase during the night of January 24 and the early morning of December 25, as well as the night of December 31 and January 1.

Various leaders of the 27 taxi unions that were interviewed by the news portal, Informado Caribe, highlighted that it is a “tradition” for drivers to obtain their Christmas bonus, since while the population has fun, they continue working.

Jose Luis Cabrera, a driver for the Andrés Quintana Roo Union in Cancun, pointed out that the authorities “have authorized them” to double the rate. This means that if the minimum rate is 45 pesos, it would be 90. The worst will be for tourists, since a trip from the Hotel Zone to the Airport, which is commonly charged at 800 pesos, will cost 1,600 pesos.

This will apply from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., both at Christmas and New Year.

Although most users do not agree with these practices, members of the Cancun taxi drivers union explained that they will have colleagues to identify these taxis (according to their words) who try to use Uber, warning that they will be stopped and force passengers to use the services of taxi drivers.

For his part, the director of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute, Rodrigo Alcazar, denied that the institute had authorized this increase.

In an interview for the Informado Caribe portal, he said that there is only one authorized rate, and only this can be applied. In case they try to overcharge, he urged users to call the Imoveqroo numbers to file a complaint.

He also pointed out that taxi drivers are not the authority to stop Uber drivers, much less to force users to use their services through violence.
