More than 5,000 hotel workers in Cancún are left without public transportation starting at kilometer 20 of Kukulcán Boulevard, following the construction of new accommodation centers in the third section of the hotel zone.

This was announced by Miguel Ángel Lemus Mateos, president of the Quintana Roo Real Estate Developers Association:

“From kilometer 20 to 25, seven hotels operate, with more than 5,000 employees without public transportation. We have already presented the case to the governor and the director of Imoveqroo. We are already working with the concessionaires to extend service hours. Therefore, these are actions that we, as a society, must promote so that the government does not correct them when it has time.”

Currently, public transportation buses in Cancún’s hotel zone only go as far as Playa Delfines, leaving staff working in hotels and tourist services located further away without direct coverage.

Hotel Employees in Cancún Resign Due to Lack of Public Transportation

Just last June, the Cancún Chapter of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) also announced that the lack of public transportation is generating a high rate of resignations in local companies, reaching levels of up to 30% in some cases.

María Jovita Portillo Navarro, president of the employers’ organization, led a meeting at that time with Rafael Hernández Kotasek, head of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo), to whom they raised the need to engage in dialogue with transportation companies to address this lack of mobility for workers.

She added that the problem is complex, as the lack of transportation is combined with the long distances workers must travel from their homes to their workplaces, which, for many, is unaffordable due to the high costs of public transportation in Cancún.

This problem is shared by the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac), whose leader, Julio Villarreal Zapata, agrees that they are also feeling the effects of the massive resignations of their employees due to the lack of public transportation to transport them home in a timely and efficient manner, especially at night.
