Antonio Pérez Garibay was in the paddock of the Mexico City Grand Prix, supporting his son Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez and commented on the progress made to make a Formula One race in Cancun a reality.

Antonio Pérez Garibay, father of Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez, insisted that the Formula 1 Cancun Grand Prix will be a reality if Claudia Sheinbaum wins the 2024 presidential elections.

Pérez Garibay assured that he already has the support of the private initiative to make a second Grand Prix a reality in Mexico.

“The project is very advanced. I’ve been walking for three years. We have everything necessary to achieve it. The only thing that is needed is the signature of a president of the country for five years,” said the father of ‘Checo’ Pérez prior to the classification of the 2023 Mexican Grand Prix, which was held this Saturday, October 28 at the Autódromo de los Rodriguez Brothers.

Claudia Sheinbaum is going to do the Cancun GP without a federal budget

In addition to the conversations with Sheinbaum, who is leading in the polls and is emerging as Morena’s presidential candidate, Antonio Pérez Garibay explained that he already has the support of businessmen, although he did not give details of who is behind the proposal.

“Claudia Sheinbaum knows how to make a Grand Prix without a budget from the federal, state or municipal government… All with entrepreneurs,” he said.

The Mexico City Grand Prix has surpassed its attendance record for two consecutive years.

‘Checo’s’ father added that he is also in talks with Formula One Management (FOM) to make the Cancun Grand Prix a reality starting in 2025. “I have the investment fund, the money, the land. “I have their support, they have not closed the door on me.”

“Yes, you ask me how the Formula 1 Grand Prix is going for Jalisco, it is going at zero percent. There is no interest from anything, neither from anyone nor from the people with money, nor from the people of the land, nor from the FIA nor from Formula 1. Cancún is the best brand in the world, it is a great brand,” he noted.

‘Checo’s’ father also spoke about his political aspirations, since he seeks to be a candidate for Morena and governor of Jalisco.

He noted that he has spoken with his son about his political aspirations and that they both agree to separate his interests.

“My relationship with ‘Checo’ is one of total respect. He wants to be world champion. I want to be governor of Jalisco. They are different topics, but what I do tell you is that Mexico will have ‘Checo’ as world champion in the next 10 years.”
