Chetumal transporters threaten to block the Tulum airport

Transporters from Chetumal have joined the national work stoppage due to the outstanding debt of 90 million pesos for their transportation work related to the Tren Maya project. Members of the Transportistas Unidos organization carried out their threat by organizing a nationwide roadblock. They transport basalt rock and construction materials for the Tren Maya, and the owed amount exceeds 90 million pesos. As a result, they blocked the entrance to the city of Chetumal.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is scheduled to tour the Tren Maya construction area, accompanied by President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum. This visit prompted the transporters to take advantage of the presence of the highest authority in the country to demand payment for their overdue services.

In their efforts to pressure for payment, they also threatened to block Tulum International Airport.

Among those denouncing the situation are construction contractors Ulises Ortiz Lozada and Nicolas Plascencia. Specifically, they point to Lieutenant Gabriel Lomelí Vera, Colonel Mario Acebedo Hernández, and Major Oswaldo Osorio Peñaflor, who are responsible for sections 4, 6, and 7 of the projects.

It’s worth noting that the state police’s riot control unit was present but remained as spectators, not getting involved in any altercations. Their presence was purely precautionary.
