A recent YouTube video by Argentine couple Pablo and Danay have sent shockwaves through social media, as they compare the prices of basic products between Cancún, Mexico, and their home country. The pair, who recently relocated to the resort city, were astonished to discover that many everyday items are significantly more expensive in Argentina.
In a detailed analysis, Pablo and Danay walked viewers through the aisles of a Walmart supermarket in Cancún, meticulously comparing prices with those in Argentina. The contrast was striking, with some products costing nearly 50% less in Mexico.
A kilo of apples, for instance, cost 33 Mexican pesos in Cancún, whereas it weighed in at $3 (or approximately 58 Mexican pesos) in Argentina. A 2.5-liter Coca-Cola also saw a substantial price difference, with 40 Mexican pesos paid in Mexico and 58 Mexican pesos in Argentina.
The comparisons continued with white bread, costing 48 Mexican pesos in Mexico versus 91 Mexican pesos in Argentina, and a dozen eggs priced at 37 Mexican pesos in Cancún but an eye-watering $4 (or around 77 Mexican pesos) in Argentina.
After tallying up their purchases, Pablo and Danay estimated that the same products would have cost an astonishing $73,503 Argentine pesos ($1,250 Mexican pesos) back home. In contrast, their total bill in Mexico came to a relatively modest $873.50 Mexican pesos ($44.56 USD).
The video has garnered over 3 million views and sparked intense debate on social media. Some users argued that Cancún’s high cost of living is due to its tourist location and the fact that Walmart is an expensive store in the area. Others, however, were surprised by the prices in Argentina and attributed the disparity to inflation.
The video has also shed light on the differences in pricing between Mexico’s tourist areas and other parts of the country. As one viewer noted, “Mexico City is much cheaper, and if you go to the markets, prices go down even more.”
