Due to the increase in crime rates in the beach area and cases of criminals using the sea route to carry out armed attacks, Governor Mara Lezama requested support from the Secretary of the Navy, Raymundo Morales, who responded immediately by sending jet skis for patrols along the coastal strip.
It was announced that four Navy jet skis will patrol the sea to cover 25 kilometers of the Cancún coast, as well as the continental part of Isla Mujeres to Puerto Juárez.
The decision was made in response to the increase in murders committed with impunity from the sea by hitmen who arrive and flee on jet skis, without being able to be detained. These maritime patrols by the Mexican Navy are part of the new national security strategy, considering that the surveillance of coasts and beaches is a federal responsibility.
For several years, criminals have used jet skis to commit all kinds of crimes in Cancún, from robberies and assaults on restaurants and other businesses in the lagoon area to executions of people on the beaches, including collateral victims.
Lezama explained that Admiral Raymundo Morales issued instructions and the Navy’s vessels arrived to form the patrol pairs, specifically four military-type jet skis.
Meanwhile, Ana Paty Peralta, municipal president of Benito Juárez, also announced that at least 600 Navy soldiers are already in the destination, as part of actions to strengthen security strategies to combat crime in the Mexican Caribbean.
As reported by REPORTUR.mx, at the beginning of October, the municipal government of Benito Juárez (Cancún) held working meetings with the nautical sector to reinforce security measures in the rental of jet skis and thus prevent them from being used by criminals, indicated at the time by Pablo Gutiérrez, general secretary of the City Council.
