Cancun, Q.R. — The head of Cancun tourism says the city is anticipating more than 300,000 visitors over the summer, adding that it will be mostly national tourists that arrive for vacation.
Frank López Reyes, the Director General de Turismo de Cancún, estimates that during the summer vacation season, Cancun will receive between 300,000 and 400,000 tourists, of which 85 percent will be of national origin.
He says this will generate around a 50 percent occupancy rate among regional hotels, providing a rebound in the industry after the significant drop due to the COVID epidemic.
The Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association reports that 80 hotels are currently in operation offering 16,980 rooms. Of those 80 hotels, 39 of them are located in the Cancun Hotel Zone.
To date, 114 tourist accommodation centers remain closed around the state.
