The appeal of Cancún and Tulum has attracted Moroccan investments aimed at building hotels on their beaches, according to Abdelfattah Lebbar, His Majesty the King of Morocco’s ambassador to Mexico.
“You know, Cancún and Tulum are now internationally fashionable, as businesspeople are driven by the interest to invest and see opportunities in Mexico,” he stated during the CANACAR 2024 National Convention.
He mentioned that Moroccan entrepreneurs have built five hotels to cater to travel and tourism in Mexico.
He declared that Moroccan hotel chains have constructed and invested in tourist complexes in Tulum, one of the destinations most favored by tourists from the United States, Canada, and Europe.
“In a month, I will inaugurate another hotel built with Moroccan capital in Tulum,” he affirmed.
He detailed that these five hotels were built in Tulum, and one of them will be inaugurated this year.
The arrival of new entrepreneurs is not reported to diplomatic authorities, but “we see increasing interest from investors,” he noted.
“These are private entrepreneurs who have built hotels with Moroccan architecture, very close to their culture,” said Abdelfattah Lebbar.
“There is a lot of interest from Moroccan and Mexican entrepreneurs to invest,” he detailed.
“Mexicans also see opportunities in Morocco, as happened with a large company that went to buy a cement plant,” he pointed out.
He added that companies like Bimbo operate in Morocco and others are interested in the Moroccan market, which offers an important geographical location being 12 kilometers from Europe: “We are the gateway to Africa and the Arab world.”
The ambassador recalled that they are going to sign a memorandum of understanding with the National Chamber of Freight Transport regarding road transport, which will help see the plans for renewing the vehicle fleet among transporters in Morocco.
The Minister of Economy and Industry of Morocco is one of the guests at Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration.
“There is a very good relationship between Mexico and Morocco, but more diplomatic efforts need to be made,” he said.
Abdelfattah Lebbar added that they do not have an agreement with the Mexican government to share security strategies.
“We are discussing the issue because there are many things in common between Mexico and Morocco. For example, Mexico has a border with the United States, and Morocco has a border with Europe, and you have the problem with drug trafficking, and we also have the problem,” he said.
“When there is a border, there are problems with drug and human trafficking,” he added.
