Border Dispute Between Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo: A Long-Standing Issue

63

The border dispute between Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo states in Mexico is a complex and longstanding issue. According to Deputy Filiberto Martinez Mendez, who presides over the border commission, there is limited scope for his commission to maneuver due to the sensitive nature of the issue.

The controversy has its roots in the 1990s under the government of Mario Villanueva Madrid, who was dissatisfied with Campeche’s decision to create the municipality of Calakmul on land that belonged to Quintana Roo. This led Mendez to file a constitutional controversy over 20 years ago, which remains unresolved and has been stuck in the archives of federal popular representatives and even the Mexican Supreme Court (SCJN).

Mendez’s comments highlight the intricacies and challenges involved in resolving this border dispute. The issue continues to be a point of contention between the three states, with no clear resolution in sight.
