A new beach club is in the works for Xcalacoco, a coastal area located just north of Playa del Carmen. The project, dubbed “Xcalacoco Beach Club,” has submitted technical studies to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) as part of its bid to obtain environmental impact authorization.

According to an Environmental Impact Statement prepared by developer Artemio Roque Álvarez, the beach club will be built on a one-hectare plot of land in the heart of a coastal ecosystem. The development will feature a range of amenities, including a restaurant, common areas, walkways, a terrace, and solar panels.

The project’s objectives are focused on expanding the local tourist offerings by providing higher-quality services to visitors. “To increase the range of ‘beach clubs’ currently available in the region, reorienting the market toward higher-quality products,” states the statement. The development also aims to attract new markets, capital, and investment to the area.

Meanwhile, Playa del Carmen is bracing for a surge in tourists this summer despite the ongoing sargassum issue. To mitigate the impact of the seaweed on tourism, local business leaders have called on tour package sellers to include visits to cenotes and archaeological sites such as Cobá, Chichén Itzá, and Tulum in their packages.

“The outlook is looking pretty good,” said Adán Toledo Lucero, president of the National Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Services (Canaco-Servytur) of Playa del Carmen. “When the algae arrive, people tend to go out to see the ruins, the cenotes, or the parks we have like Xel-Há, Xcaret or in search of ruins like Chichén Itzá, Cobá, or like the ones in Playa del Carmen.”
