Avianca Reduces Direct Service from Bogotá to Tulum Amid Low Demand”

Colombian airline Avianca has announced that it will be suspending its direct route between Bogotá and Tulum starting July 3, 2025. The last flight is scheduled for July 1, marking the end of a service that began operating in December 2024.

The direct route, operated by Airbus A320 aircraft with a capacity for 180 passengers, initially offered three weekly frequencies and over 1,000 seats to Tulum’s Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport. However, despite its initial success, Avianca has decided to cancel the service citing low demand as the reason.

According to the airline, it regularly evaluates its route network to focus capacity on routes with the highest demand. As a result, passengers who have booked flights after July 1 will be rebooked via Cancún instead of flying directly from Bogotá to Tulum.

Avianca has reassured customers that they will continue to provide access and connectivity to travelers through other routes. The airline stated that it will fulfill its obligations arising from air transportation contracts and maintain connections between Mexico City, Cancún, and Colombia’s major cities, including Bogotá and Medellín.

In a related development, Avianca has maintained an interline agreement with Mexican carrier Viva Aerobus since December, allowing passengers to book flights on both airlines seamlessly.

Avianca’s decision to cancel the direct service comes just months after launching the route in December 2024. At that time, it became the first Colombian airline to operate flights from Bogotá to Tulum, marking an important milestone for the airline and the city’s growing tourism industry.

It is worth noting that Avianca was not the only airline to operate this route initially. Another carrier had also discontinued its service, but details about the reasons behind this decision were not provided.
